Follow the Drinking Gourd by:Alex jara “Follow the Drinking Gourd" is an American folk song first published in 1928.It was supposed to help slaves ecscape from slavery to the north and to freedom. When they sing it is kind like a lettter or messages to others.It has a point of reference so they would not get lost.Two of the stars in the Big Dipper line up very closely with and point. and it will be lined up to the north and if it is the slaves will follow it.at the end of the ecscape people say that they would be picked up.
